Learning apps for language coaches, teachers & schools

Your teaching as an app, so learning continues between lessons.

I build language coaches, teachers and schools their own learning apps: with their exercises, their style and gamification that motivates every day. As a web app, on the App Store and on Google Play.

The problem

What happens between your lessons decides.

You teach a great lesson. Then come the days when your students are on their own.

Homework gets forgotten

Nobody tells your students what to practise today. So little happens until the next lesson.

Generic apps practise whatever

They know neither your method nor the exam your students are working towards.

Motivation lasts three weeks

After that there's no reason to keep going the next day. Progress stays invisible.

Your material sits in folders

Years of exercises, lists and worksheets, scattered across paper and PDFs instead of living in an app with your name on it.

How it started

That's exactly how it was for my girlfriend.

She is from Serbia, has lived in Germany for a year and needs German at B1 level to really settle in here.

She had books, a course and several notebooks she had to keep up with and carry everywhere. She enjoyed writing those notebooks. But was it efficient? Not really. And was it still fun in the long run? Let's not even go there.

So I built her an app of her own. Shaped around what she likes, for her goal.

Now she has everything in one place:

  • an AI that gives her personal feedback, and a natural voice that reads aloud
  • exercises in the format of the official exams from German language institutes, preparing her for exactly her exam
  • gamification and reminders that adapt to her learning rhythm
  • a game with a goal: swim up the waterfall and become a dragon

My girlfriend practising: explained in Serbian, practised in German.
The moment it clicked

A koi, a waterfall and a dragon.

Where does the waterfall come from? From my girlfriend.

I had already planned the exercises: every task type from the official exams from A1 to B2, plus research-based learning methods like spaced repetition, instant feedback and small daily goals. What was missing was the app's face.

My girlfriend loves Japan. One evening she told me about a koi that swims up a waterfall.

Whoever reaches the top becomes a dragon.

In that moment I knew exactly what the app had to look like. Every exercise takes the koi a little higher. The dragon is the passed exam.

Machi is her pet name for me and mine for her. Since then, so is the app.

Example project

What's inside Machi.

Machi is a web app that installs on a phone like a real app. Four examples of what it can do. (The screenshots show the German interface.)

Machi exam training A2 with the modules reading, listening, writing and speaking
Exam training

Just like the real exam

Reading, listening, writing and speaking, modelled on the structure and rules of the official exams from A1 to B2. Every exam is freshly mixed from large task pools, and like the real thing the result only comes at the end, with a review of every task.

For your app: your exam goals, your task types.

Machi exercise on accusative and dative with a cheat sheet
Feedback

Corrections that explain

Wherever my girlfriend writes or speaks, the AI marks mistakes in red, puts the correct form next to them and explains why in one sentence, matched to her level. The rules sit as a cheat sheet right below every task.

For your app: feedback in your tone and by your rules.

Machi home screen with level, week bar and daily goal
Gamification

Sticking with it is built in

Daily goal, streak, levels and a language pass with 149 reward cards. Reviews are scheduled with FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition method. Reminders arrive when my girlfriend usually studies.

For your app: rewards that fit your students.

Machi onboarding in Serbian: why are you learning German?
18 languages

Explained in the learner's language

Machi explains itself in 18 languages, from Serbian and Turkish to Arabic and Ukrainian. Practice always happens in German. So every learner understands the rule and still practises the target language.

For your app: the languages your students speak.

What I built for my girlfriend, I'll build for your students.

With your content, your style and your own version of the koi.

Who it's for

For everyone who teaches languages.

Language coaches

Your method as an app under your name. Your clients keep practising between sessions, and you can see where they stand.

Teachers

Exercises that match your lessons and correct themselves. Fewer piles of marking, more time for conversation in class.

Language schools & schools

One app for all courses, with classes, teacher access, a GDPR data processing agreement and a pilot phase with one group.

Not the right fit if you only want to upload a video course. Ready-made course platforms do that well, and I'll tell you so honestly in our first call.

About me

I can do all this thanks to my mother.

When I was 11, she sent me to an SAP summer camp. That's where I programmed my first website, and I haven't stopped since. I've taught myself nine programming languages along the way.

Then came 11 years at university: 3.5 years in programming and 7.5 years in sports science at KIT. Every day there revolved around one question: how do people learn new things, what keeps them going and why do they quit?

That's why I know how learning works, and I can turn it into code on a scientific basis. For the DWI (walking.de) I've already built an e-learning platform that now carries its own business model.

Process

From the first call to the finished app.

You see your app before you buy it. The price is fixed before we start.

  1. STEP 1

    First call

30 minutes, free. You tell me about your students, your method and your goal. I'll tell you honestly whether an app of your own makes sense, and you get an offer with a fixed package price.

  2. STEP 2

    Prototype

You pay 25% of the package price and get a clickable prototype in your design within two to three weeks. One feedback round is included.

  3. STEP 3

    Your decision

You have 14 days to review the prototype at your own pace. Then you decide:

    • It fits: I finish the app and the 25% is fully credited.
    • It doesn’t: You get the 25% back, no reason needed.
  4. STEP 4

    Build & launch

A new version to try every two weeks. Then your app goes live, onto the App Store and Google Play. Three revisions based on your feedback and operation are included in the first three months.

Optional: a website that fits you and your app and sells it. You can choose it as early as the first call.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How much does a learning app of my own cost?

A web app costs €4,900, with the App Store and Google Play €9,900, and for language schools from €14,900. The price is fixed before we start. After three months, operation is added: €69, €129 or €199 a month depending on the package. A matching sales website costs €1,900. All prices are net, plus VAT where applicable.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. After the 25% for the prototype, you spread the rest over 12 monthly instalments at no extra cost. For the web app that's €306.25 a month. Alternatively you pay from €249 a month for 24 months, with operation already included. This monthly model is for self-employed people and businesses. The app and code are yours with the last instalment.

What if I don't like the prototype?

Then you get the 25% you paid for the prototype back in full, no reason needed. One feedback round on the prototype is included, after that you have 14 days to decide. In that case the design stays with me.

How long does development take?

I plan two to three weeks for the prototype. How long the finished app takes depends on its scope. We set the schedule before we start, and you'll see a new version every two weeks.

Do I need technical knowledge?

No. You bring your content and your experience with learners, I take care of the technology. I also handle publishing on the App Store and Google Play.

Who owns the app and the code?

You do, once everything is paid, with instalments after the last one. The app, source code and store accounts are in your name. While I run the operation, the hosting is with me. If you cancel it, I hand everything over, with documentation so any developer can keep working on it.

Will the app be on the App Store and Google Play?

Yes, if you want it to be. You need your own developer account with Apple (US$99 per year) and with Google (a one-time US$25). I'll help you set them up.

What happens after launch?

Three revisions based on your feedback and operation are included in the first three months. After that, operation continues for €69 to €199 a month, cancellable monthly. Or you take over the app yourself, with code and data. I build new features for a fixed price or €90 an hour, but only if you want them.

Can I pay with a revenue share?

Yes, if you sell the app to your students. The package price then drops by 30 to 50%, and 15 to 20% of your app revenue goes to me for 24 months, with a fixed cap. We'll work out in the first call whether that suits your project.

Is it GDPR-compliant?

Yes. I use servers in the EU, store only what the app really needs and sign a data processing agreement on request. For schools it's always included.

Can an AI correct my students?

Yes, just like in Machi: the AI marks mistakes, shows the correct form and briefly explains why. The cost depends on usage and can be capped with daily limits.

Can my students use Machi directly?

Machi is available as its own app for anyone learning German: machi.edwinvonlemberg.com. This page is about an app that looks entirely like you.
